Yes I have a Dell 3020 desktop that is not powering on. I installed a 450 watt PSU into this desktop to power an Nvidia graphics card using a 24pin to 8pin adapter and the unit will not power on. Nothing happens when I press the power button. The orange light is lit on the MOBO which I read means its getting power. I figured it wasn't going to work so installed all the oem parts, graphics card and PSU and still having the issue. Desktop was working perfectly fine before I swapped the parts and really hoping I didn't somehow mess up the motherboard. I even installed the 450 watt PSU and graphics card into another desktop and they work fine. Any help would be amazing.
The mobo light just means you're getting 5v through to the mobo, that's it.
If it's not powering on when you hit the button you probably don't have the wire from the power putting connected to the pin out on the mobo.
Ive double checked and triple checked that i plugged both the 4 pin and 8 pin power connectors from the PSU into the motherboard. I can even press the test button on back of the PSU and it lights up green and cpu fan kicks on. Also checked i had the power switch connector plugged into motherboard correctly multiple times.
One of the reasons I don't like Dell is that they do things a little weird sometimes.
They tend to lock up when there are power events and the 24 pin to motherboard and the 8 or 4 pins to the CPU. Wait 5 minutes to let the capacitors drain. Sometimes you need to remove the BIOS battery too.
your post reads like you used a 24pin to 8 pin adapter on the video card. please say this is not the case.
the owners manual for the 3020 says solid Amber power led is good psu but failed to get status code. that means the psu is sending other data to the motherboard and an after market psu likely cannot be used.
Agree with above comments about the PSU incompatibility. Dell tend to have different (non standard) components. Suggest you check voltages on old Dell PSU and compare them with your new one.
I used a 24 pin to 8 pin adapter to connect new PSU to motherboard. Was installing new PSU because old one did not have extra power adapter for new video card. After it didnt work i put the old video card and psu back in (way it was before which was working fine) and have same problem. Nothing when i hit power button.
I would not give up yet. My course of action would be after trying resetting the CMOS as described above:
1. Check power supply on its own. It will not fully power on (on normal ones) until the relevant two connectors have shorted out. Explaining this: the motherboard does this shorting out if connected to to the PSU to tell it that it thinks the motherboard is good. I am not sure what the pins are for the Dell PSU.
2. I would check that pushing the power on button really shorts the two connectors going to the motherboard and take note of what pins the are on the motherboard.
3. Check that the reset button pins are not permanently shorted because the button is jammed in for instance.
4. Take out motherboard and visually inspect for bent pins.
5. With the motherboard on a bench and only the PSU, an external keyboard, and a monitor connected try powering it up by temporary connecting the two motherboard pins that you have identified earlier.
Hopefully, you will have found the problem by the time you have got to step 5. If you can't get the motherboard going as in step 5 then it looks like a dead motherboard and whilst there are actions you can try it becomes uneconomic and difficult to do without experience.
I have come across something like this before. I even pulled the power and held the power button in to drain all the flea power, and the thing would not boot. After some searching I found if you pull the power, then pull out the RAM sticks, let them sit for a bit, then put it all back together.
Mmmh, seems like something happened here when you installed the new PSU; when I do such installations, I usually take them a step at a time.
Install the PSU, turn on the PC before installing the Graphics card, making sure the power actually turns on the PC before connecting the card.
This way, if the PC doesn't boot after the card installation, then it is easier to know that the issue is in the new hardware - PC integration.
You need to do a power drain; CMOS, RAM pullouts, the works.
PS: Disconnect the power button connector from the MOBO, then if you're familiar with shorting the 2 pins on the MOBO (from where the power button connector plugs into) to see if the PC turns on, then we can also eliminate the possibility of having a defective power button connector...which happens sometimes.
